Unfortunately, some individuals choose not to seek treatment for fear that it will be painful and time consuming or even in trepidation of the unknown, despite the fact that untreated gum disease results in receding gums, bone loss, and ultimately, tooth loss. Here at North Raleigh Periodontics, we work to restore and maintain the health of your gums and teeth. Furthermore, with the use of our new Waterlase laser treatment to enhance periodontal therapy, we can provide even faster, more effective, and more comfortable treatment of gum disease.

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is caused by bacteria that gets trapped in your gum “pockets,” deep in the gum tissue that reaches down to the tooth roots. This trapped bacteria, if not removed, can harden into “calculus” underneath your gum line and cause rapid deterioration of your teeth and gums. Whereas traditionally, individuals had to have the bacteria manually scraped out from underneath the gum line, we can supplement your periodontal care by utilizing the laser to zap that plaque and calculus lurking around your gums.

Over 90% of adults develop cold sores, or “fever blisters,” but for some, the effects of this virus are more pronounced than for others. Cold sores are small blisters that typically develop around the mouth or on the lips and that flare up periodically. Although not life-threatening, these sores are the often the source of great discomfort and annoyance. Flare-ups typically occur in the same place and are sometimes accompanied by physical symptoms like headaches, achy muscles, dehydration, and swollen lips. The virus is extremely contagious and can be passed through close oral contact. Canker sores also affect the mouth area and can be as painful as cold sores.

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is an infection that affects the tissues and bone supporting the teeth. Seeking professional periodontal treatment is a crucial step in treating gum disease, but that is only part of the equation. An important factor in maintaining healthy gums and teeth is consistent at-home care, which often presents problems to individuals who are not sure how to effectively maintain an at-home perio care routine.

Fortunately, establishing an effective oral cleaning regimen at home is not difficult with a few simple steps:

A diplomate of the Board of Periodontology, Dr. Singletary has completed research and training above and beyond the requisite PhD degree necessary to practice as a periodontist. His diplomate status makes him one of the few specialists “universally recognized by the public, the dental profession, the medical community, and third-party payers as the preferred providers of periodontal and dental implant surgical care,” according to the American Board of Periodontology.

Our incorporation of Waterlase Laser technology is improving the already-superb patient comfort, care, and treatment that we provide our patients at North Raleigh Periodontics. While Waterlase can be used for a variety of treatments, from deep cleaning to the prevention of gum recession, Waterlase is especially effective when utilized to treat peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis.

North Raleigh Periodontics is ecstatic to have incorporated laser therapy into our patient treatment! We utilize a type of laser called a Waterlase to precisely, quietly, and painlessly treat a variety of periodontal issues. The laser is especially beneficial in treating periodontal disease through minimally invasive protocols to remove plaque and calculus under and around the gum line.

Laurie is the talented in-house graphic designer here at North Raleigh Periodontics. When asked what she enjoys about graphic design, she explains that it is “a creative outlet— I get to meld my interests in design and computers to create visually interesting projects.”

Originally from Woodbridge, Virginia, Laurie attended East Carolina University’s School of Art and Design. She then moved to the City of Oaks in 1992, where she has lived ever since with her husband and two sons.
