Understanding the Difference: Periodontal Care from a Periodontist vs. a General Dentist

At North Raleigh Periodontics and Implant Center, we often encounter patients who are unsure about the differences between receiving periodontal care from a general dentist versus a periodontist. While general dentists are highly skilled professionals capable of handling a broad range of dental issues, periodontists offer specialized care that can be crucial for certain periodontal conditions.

The Path to Becoming a Periodontist

The journey to becoming a periodontist involves extensive education and training. After completing dental school, which itself is a rigorous program, aspiring periodontists undergo an additional three years of specialty training focused solely on periodontics. This advanced training includes in-depth study and practice of gum disease treatment, dental implants, and other complex periodontal procedures.

Some periodontists choose to go even further, aiming to become a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. This credential requires an additional five-year process beyond the three-year periodontal program, involving comprehensive exams and case documentation. This further extends their knowledge and expertise, ensuring they are exceptionally well-equipped to handle a variety of periodontal issues.

Specialized Training and Focus

While general dentists receive training in various fields including orthodontics, endodontics, prosthetics, and periodontics, a periodontist’s training is concentrated specifically on periodontal disease and implant dentistry. This specialization means that periodontists are not only proficient in treating gum disease but also excel in performing advanced procedures like bone grafting, sinus lifts, and the placement of dental implants.

Periodontists are dedicated to evidence-based practice, spending years studying the latest research and clinical techniques to ensure the best outcomes for their patients. This focus on continual learning and application of cutting-edge methods sets periodontists apart in their field.

Comprehensive Care and Long-Term Health

When it comes to periodontal care, the approach of a periodontist is thorough and meticulous. Periodontists aim to save natural teeth whenever possible, using treatments that address the root causes of gum issues rather than just the symptoms. Their extensive training allows them to diagnose and treat conditions that might be overlooked in a general dental setting.

Moreover, periodontists manage a range of gum issues beyond just disease. These can include gum recession, cosmetic gum surgery, and dental implants. By focusing on the health of the gums and the underlying bone structure, periodontists play a critical role in ensuring the longevity and stability of your teeth.

When to Seek a Periodontist

It’s important to know when to consult a periodontist. While general dentists can handle routine dental care and minor gum issues, a periodontist is recommended for:

  • Moderate to advanced gum disease
  • Significant gum recession
  • Complex dental implant cases
  • Persistent bad breath or bleeding gums
  • Loose or shifting teeth

Ensuring Optimal Care

For those already receiving periodontal treatment at a general dentist’s office, it’s worth considering a second opinion from periodontist, especially for more serious issues. Patients should feel empowered to ask about their dentist’s training and experience in periodontal procedures. This is similar to checking a cardiologist’s credentials before a heart procedure – your oral health deserves the same diligence.

At North Raleigh Periodontics and Implant Center, Dr. Macon Singletary and his team bring years of specialized training and experience to every patient. We are committed to providing care that not only addresses immediate concerns but also promotes long-term oral health and overall well-being.

When is A Frenectomy Needed?

A tongue tie, also known as ankyloglossia, occurs in people’s mouths when the frenulum is too thick or tight causing difficulty speaking or eating. This condition can be especially problematic for younger people, preventing them from eating properly and maintaining a healthy nutrition intake. Additionally, the condition can cause difficulty pronouncing certain sounds or phrases since the tongue is unable to move correctly. Present at birth, tongue ties tether the tongue to the bottom of the mouth, restricting movement and interfering with talking, eating, and swallowing.

A similar condition, called a lip tie, involves the frenum (or frenulum) of the upper or lower lip, limiting the movement range of a person’s mouth. Like tongue ties, lip ties can interfere with a person’s ability to obtain proper nutrition. Lip ties can also eventually lead to gum recession if left untreated.

How Do You Know If You Have a Tongue or Lip Tie?

Signs that a person may have a tongue tie or lip tie include: a lack of tongue or lip mobility, the inability to reach the tongue past the bottom teeth or a tongue that looks heart shaped when the patient sticks it out. Tongue or lip ties can be fixed, however, with a procedure called a Frenectomy which is a service that North Raleigh Perio provides for it’s patients.

The Procedure

The procedure is done by removing a part of the frenum with the Erbium Chromium YSGG laser by Biolase, freeing the tongue or lip tie in the patient’s mouth. Laser assisted frenectomies can be more effective and much less invasive, involving shorter recoveries times and better results than traditional methods of treatment. Dr. Singletary explains this process further here.

Being tongue or lip tied can be inconvenient, but these conditions are easily fixed! The frenectomy procedure is quick, fairly painless, involves minimal bleeding, and the recovery time is short. Patients are able to resume their normal activity the same day. Feel free to contact us with questions. Serving the greater Triangle area – Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Clayton, Rolesville, and Wake Forest.

Enhancing Precision and Comfort in Dental Implant Surgery: The Power of Guided Implant Placement

Serving the greater Triangle area – Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Clayton, Rolesville, and Wake Forest.

In the realm of modern dentistry, precision and accuracy are paramount, especially when it comes to procedures like dental implant placement. Regardless of the type of dental implant procedure performed, traditionally, implant surgery relied on the skill and expertise of the clinician, often leading to variability in outcomes. However, the advent of guided implant surgery has revolutionized this process, offering a more advanced and preferred method for both practitioners and patients alike.

Guided implant placement at North Raleigh Periodontics and Implant Center involves the use of cutting-edge technology to create customized surgical guides that dictate the exact positioning and angulation of implants within the jawbone. This approach not only streamlines the surgical process but also ensures unparalleled precision and accuracy, leading to superior long-term results. Compared to non-guided implant placement, guided surgery minimizes the risk of errors, reduces operating time, and enhances overall patient comfort and satisfaction.

At North Raleigh Periodontics and Implant Center, we are committed to staying at the forefront of dental innovation, which is why we integrate state-of-the-art tools and techniques into our practice. Central to our approach is the utilization of the Medit scanner, cone-beam tomography, and our in-house 3D printer. These technologies work synergistically to capture detailed images of the patient’s oral anatomy and fabricate precise surgical guides tailored to their unique needs.

With the Medit scanner, we can obtain high-resolution digital impressions of the patient’s teeth and surrounding structures, eliminating the need for messy traditional impressions. This data, combined with cone-beam tomography, allows us to create comprehensive 3D models of the jawbone, accurately assessing bone density and identifying vital structures like nerves and sinuses. Leveraging this information, our team designs customized implant guides that guide the placement of implants with unparalleled accuracy.

Our commitment to excellence extends beyond the surgical suite, as evidenced by our informative Gum Guru Podcast, where we delve into various aspects of periodontics and implant dentistry. Through platforms like our website and podcast, we strive to educate and empower patients, fostering a deeper understanding of their treatment options and instilling confidence in our approach to guided implant surgery.

Incorporating visual elements such as informative photos and videos on implant options further enhances our message, providing current and prospective patients with a glimpse into the advanced techniques and technologies we employ at North Raleigh Periodontics. By embracing guided implant surgery, we aim to redefine the standard of care, delivering results that exceed expectations while prioritizing patient comfort and satisfaction. As always, we are available to answer your questions related to guided implants or any other questions you may have.

Dental Insurance: Things They May Not Tell You

Serving the greater Triangle area – Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Clayton, Rolesville, and Wake Forest.

In an ideal world, dental insurance would cover all necessary treatments, ensuring that everyone has access to top-notch dental care. However, the reality is often quite different. Dental insurance plans come with limitations, exclusions, and conditions that can lead to denial of coverage for certain treatments. In this blog post, we’ll explore why dental insurance may not pay for specific treatments and emphasize the importance of prioritizing dental health regardless of insurance coverage.

Questions to ask before you purchase dental insurance:

Why won't my insurance cover my dental work?1. Waiting Periods: Many dental insurance plans have waiting periods before they start covering certain treatments. This means that if you need immediate dental care, you might find yourself facing out-of-pocket expenses.

2. Annual Maximums: Dental insurance plans usually come with annual maximums – the maximum amount the insurance company will pay within a calendar year. If your treatment costs exceed this limit, you’ll be responsible for covering the remaining expenses.

3. Pre-existing Conditions: Some dental insurance plans may not cover pre-existing conditions or may have a waiting period before they do. This can be a significant hurdle for individuals who require treatment for existing dental issues.

4. Cosmetic Procedures: Most dental insurance plans focus on covering necessary and preventive care. Cosmetic procedures, such as teeth whitening or veneers, are typically not covered by insurance.

5. Frequency Limitations: Certain treatments may have limitations on how often they can be covered within a specific time frame. For example, insurance may cover dental cleanings twice a year, but additional cleanings might not be covered. Some specify that cleanings must be six months and one day apart.

6. Missing Tooth Clause: Some dental insurance plans have a missing tooth clause, meaning they may not cover treatments for teeth missing before the policy’s effective date. This can be a significant concern for individuals with pre-existing missing teeth. Most dental insurance has some stipulation that they will cover the least costly services, even if all the codes are in your plan.

7. Experimental or Unproven Treatments: Insurance plans may deny coverage for treatments considered experimental or unproven. It’s essential to discuss treatment options thoroughly with your dentist to ensure they align with your insurance coverage.

Because dental insurance limitations and denials are on the rise, our office, like many dental care professionals, offer in-house Membership Plans. With these plans, patients receive discounts and don’t have to be concerned with typical insurance limitations and denials.

Why Prioritize Dental Health Regardless of Insurance Coverage:

Preventive Care Saves Money: Investing in preventive care, such as regular check-ups and cleanings, can help avoid more extensive and costly treatments down the road.

Overall Health Impact: Dental health is closely linked to overall health . Neglecting dental issues can lead to systemic health problems, emphasizing the need to prioritize dental care irrespective of insurance coverage.

Preserving Quality of Life: Good oral health contributes to a better quality of life. Ignoring dental problems can lead to pain, discomfort, and difficulty performing everyday activities.

Long-Term Cost Savings: Addressing dental issues promptly can result in long-term cost savings. Delaying treatment may lead to more complex and expensive procedures.

Conclusion: While dental insurance limitations can be frustrating, understanding the reasons behind coverage denials empowers patients to make informed decisions about their oral health. Prioritizing dental health, regardless of insurance coverage, is crucial for overall well-being and can lead to a healthier, happier life. Remember, your smile is an investment in yourself that pays dividends beyond insurance coverage. If you have questions, you can contact us at 919-518-8222.
